Duct Testing – FAQ’s for Homeowners

In layman’s terms, what is a duct test?

A duct test (aka a pressure test, duct blaster test, or duct leakage test) is simply a process where we seal up all the vent openings and hook up a specialized fan to find out how “leaky” your duct’s are. (as shown on the left)

For more see below

Will this test hurt my ducts?

Not in the least, the 25 PA of pressure applied is equivalent to the pressure applied by your HVAC system when it is running.

Will this test void any warranties?

Not any manufacturer’s warranties and it is now being required by code for new construction & new work done to existing systems.

Why should I get my ducts tested?

If you have had a new system installed, a duct leakage test will show you that your contractor (or as a contractor a way of showing your customer) that the ducts were installed properly. It is also useful to determine where leaks are and what is required to seal them up properly.

For more, including why you should consider this for older systems:

  • Why are properly sealed ducts important? (comfort, money, indoor air quality?)
  • Wasn’t this done already?
  • Why don’t the HVAC companies normally test them?
  • How leaky is too leaky?
